A nicely narrated story of the Ampeg SVT Bass Amps. Very well done
The Ampeg Amp was the loudest bass amp on the market and could do 120dB(!) easily
You need earmuffs with -24dB NRR if you use a grinder with 94dB of noise generated, just to give you an idea of the sound pressure levels created

Super Vacuum Tube is what SVT stands for
        6146B Tubes were used

            Self-Titled Summer | Minor Threat (1984, US)

Our next Self-Titled Summer spotlight is on number 609 on The List, submitted by @markwyner. I was meaning to get back to keeping these STS posts brief, but a Fedizen specifically noted they’d like to read more about this rather iconic band so *takes deepest breath possible*:

            • Point of origin(s): Minor Threat was formed in Washington D.C. in 1980 by Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson, following the demise of their high school hardcore punk band the Teen Idles (originally called The Slinkees, formed in 1979). MacKaye had been the bassist and main lyricist, Nelson the drummer; in their new band, Nelson continued as the drummer and MacKaye continued as lyricist but switched from bass to vocals, and Brian Baker and Lyle Preslar rounded out the original lineup on bass and guitar, respectively. The first Minor Threat show would be one month after Teen Idles broke up, in December 1980, to all of 50 people (you were there, right?), opening for local bands Bad Brains and S.O.A. (State Of Alert), i.e., the band of former Teen Idles’ roadie (and lifetime bff of MacKaye) Henry Garfield aka Henry Rollins.
At about the same time as their band change, together MacKaye and Nelson started Dischord Records with the $600 that Teen Idles had earned in its existence, initially just in order to put out that band’s only release, the Minor Disturbance EP (1980).

              [

              1

              ]

The EP made enough for the label to continue, and so next they put out the sole release from S.O.A., No Policy EP (1981), followed by Minor Threat’s debut s/t EP (also referred to as 1st 7″) and soon after their second EP, In My Eyes (both 1981). The album we look at here is a compilation of those 7″s (hence also referred to as First Two 7″s), released after the band broke up.

            • Tasting notes: Hardcore punk, none of your bullshit
            • Standout track: My favourites are “I Don’t Want to Hear It”, “Minor Threat”, and “In My Eyes”. And then, for its historical importance, “Straight Edge”. Keen eyes may have noted the X-marked hands on the cover of the Teen Idles’ EP that would come to be a symbol used in the locally-grown straight edge scene/movement/subculture. However, at the time of that band, those drawn-on Xs initially simply indicated that those hands belonged to concert attendees who were underage, and was a way to allow younger fans into venues that weren’t all-ages. The link between Minor Threat’s song “Straight Edge” and the scene though was absolutely direct, as the scene’s name and manifesto was taken straight out of MacKaye’s lyrics. “Out of Step” also provides another version of the lifestyle guidelines that at least some who considered themselves straight edge followed, including MacKaye himself.
            • Where are they now?: Following the release of their 2nd EP, Minor Threat briefly split up and then reformed a few months later (thanks to H.R. of Bad Brains) with Steve Hansgen (briefly) joining as bassist and Baker switching to second guitar. The group then put out (via Dischord Records, of course) a 12″ EP in 1983, Out of Step (with a new version of the title track)…and then (partially due to the existence of U2, lol) broke up. Each of the band members would go on to do tons of cool shit, e.g., Fugazi (and a handful of other awesome bands) was founded by MacKaye, Baker has been a member of Bad Religion since 1994, Hansgren co-produced Tool’s Opiate EP, and Dischord Records – still co-owned by MacKaye and Nelson – remains one of the best record labels on the planet.
            • Websites: Bandcamp, Wikipedia, Band profile on Dischord Records’ website

            Happy listening!

            1. The tracks had been recorded earlier that year with Don Zientara at his Inner Ear studio at the request of Skip Groff (record producer, radio DJ, and owner of the Yesterday & Today record store in Rockville, Maryland), but then shelved. ↩︎

Yesterday I was in Modena, the homeland of Pierangelo Bertoli, a respected Italian songwriter. And this piece from 1975 came to mind - fifty years old, yet it feels as if it were written today, for how relevant its message still is.
                      Some poems are timeless.
I’m sharing the link and a translation of the lyrics.

                      And Yet It Blows

And the water fills with foam, the sky with smoke,
the chemical leprosy destroys the life of rivers,
birds that barely fly, already sick with death,
cold interest has barred the doors against life.

An entire island has found its grave in the sea,
false progress wanted to test a bomb,
then rain that should quench the thirst of living earth
instead brings death, for it is radioactive.

And yet the wind still blows,
splashing water on the ships’ bows,
                      whispering songs among the leaves,
kissing the flowers, kissing them but never picking them.

One day money discovered world war,
it branded its rotten mark on beastly instinct,
it killed, it burned, it destroyed in a sorrowful litany,
and all the earth was wrapped in a black shroud.

And soon the hidden key to new secrets,
so they will cover even the planets with mud,
they will want to pollute the stars, bring war among suns,
the crimes against life they call mere mistakes.

And yet the wind still blows,
splashing water on the ships’ bows,
                      whispering songs among the leaves,
kissing the flowers, kissing them but never picking them,
and yet it brushes the fields,
caresses the flanks of the mountains,
                      tangles the hair of women,
races in flight with the birds.

And yet the wind still blows!!!

2004 is probably the greatest year in video games ever (look it up, it's wild everything that came out that year, and RE4 just barely missed at Jan 11 2005), but it seems to have been a pretty good year in other media too (movies include Shaun of the Dead, Kill Bill 2, Spiderman 2, Saw, The Incredibles, etc, anime include Samurai Champloo, Samurai 7, Futari wa Pretty Cure, Maria Watches Over Us, etc)

So what's your favourite piece of media in whatever medium you want to choose from 2004?

                                        hey so uh

can i ask some advice from fedi musicians or any ppl really

i wanna start a band or a musical project sometime in my future when i get good enough at guitar and electronics and singing

and like, i have a desire to create both heavy rock/metal/punk/grunge music but also something softer and dreamy like indie rock/indie folk or shoegaze or something completely non-rock like ambient electronica

                                        (1/2, question in the replies)

                                            🎧 Music Production 101:

                                            Understanding EQ

Equalization is the first and foremost tool in shaping sound in music production.

Equalization allows you to shape the Sound by cutting specific frequencies boosting should only be done if everything else fails. You are sculpting the audio like a artist of an intricate Bronze Master Piece.

You can improve the attack of instruments by dropping frequencies which fight that particular audio effect.

You can make vocals sound clear by using proper High Pass filters {80 to 100Hz} and equalizing the voices so that they sound as close as possible as the voice in your ears in relationship to your PA.

You can make drums have an overall much better sound than what comes out of your microphones, which may not be the most ideal for the task, or where the Acoustics are fighting a clear Attack Decay Sustain and Release {ADSR} of your drums.

Always realize that the result of your sound is a combination of the Acoustics the Microphones, the Mixing Console, the sub mixing panels, the XLR & instrument cables, the direct boxes, the electrical interference EMI and everything else
It's not just you; there are many factors which are beyond your control!

                                            🔍 Quick Tips:

Low frequencies (20–250Hz): this frequency interval adds warmth

Mids (250Hz–4kHz): this frequency interval is the most important for vocals, instruments, basically anything that shapes the music

Highs (4kHz–20kHz): this frequency interval l, which is quite large, adds brightness clarity and presence to the music

                                            🎛️

Learning to EQ properly can take your mix from sounding like mud to bright clear and warm.

Make sure to use your ears as sensors don't hunt for meters and dials

I discovered a interesting function on an effect of mine. The function auto ducks the frequencies where our voices reside so you can easily sing over regular songs.

I shall explore this Sub function further, but I know this already from other effects. This sub function is only briefly mentioned within the manual

The vocal auto ducking function only works when a dual channel signal is fed into the effect.

Now I have about two hundred(!) yes TWO HUNDRED more effects in my arsenal! So for my Bass Guitars & other instruments I now have ALL effects that I need extra, which I dont need as seperate discrete components. How? Go look up FX2000 and Behringer than come back here and tell me ;)

Here I can only do 500 bytes (why not 512?) so I post about that at bsd.cafe

Musicians should always check out which effect equipment is available in rack mount format.
This is especially important for Bass and Guitar 🎸 players

They should just ask engineers who will gladly provide the information. It is astounding to see how many pedal FX are sold for more than 300 USD, which are just two daisy chained FX easily achieved with rack mount FX units which have more than 100 different effects in total!

Now certain FX are handy to have in a separate unit, because I want to build my effect chain physically and they just sound different, in a nicer way, when you have them physical, as an analog effect unit
For those I gladly pay the 60 to 120 dollars for effect pedals, which are built like a tank, as portrait by the Joyo FX

Be very wary of Boutique FX when you are not a professional player, nor want to become a professional instrument player, because Boutique effects are Boutique
That means they are often just built in a series of 48 or less
That also means that you will pay between $400 and $1000 per unit, which Joyo can produce for you and sell for 60 to 100 USD, often surpassing the boutique unit simply because Joyo put in extra electronics!

Extra electronics to make sure that the effect sounds not just like the original, but even better.

Boutique effects do not have to be built like a tank

Joyo effect are always built like a tank.

Many Boutique Effects also lack certain critical features because the Professional player targeted has those on other FX units, which you don't possess

My Nikon bodies and my Sony body which also takes my Minolta Lenses, here 50mm f1.2, have much larger sensors and would have never failed in such a horrible manner.

In this scene I portray how good the lighting arrangement is on the Behringer rack mount effect

I made contact with few people playing the styles that I like, in a musical jamming environment. These musicians are seasoned have been playing for 50 plus years and know their instruments. I've interacted with a Tenor Saxophone 🎷 player a trumpet player, and a bass player
